Summer is here, learn how to stay safe when the heat is on!
Heatstroke is a condition caused by your body overheating, usually as a result of prolonged exposure to or physical exertion in high temperatures. This most serious form of heat injury, heatstroke, can occur if your body temperature rises to 104 F (40 C) or higher. The condition is most common in the summer months.
Heat Exhaustion can be treated by taking some simple steps as shown in the infographic above, Heatstroke however can have complications and requires immediate professional assistance.
Thankfully Heatstroke is predictable and preventable. Take these steps to prevent heatstroke during hot weather:
- Take extra precautions with certain medications. Be on the lookout for heat-related problems if you take medications that can affect your body’s ability to stay hydrated and dissipate heat.
- Pre-hydrate. Before activity starts, drink up to 16 ounces of fluid. Then drink 8 ounces every 20 minutes during the activity.
- Drink flavored water. Plain water quenches thirst too quickly, so workers tend to not drink enough of it.
- Only wear a hat if required as PPE. Hat’s restrict heat loss through the head. Workers operating in direct sunlight should consider wearing a visor.
- Wear loose, thin synthetic fabrics. They help the skin stay cool through evaporation. Avoid cotton as it soaks up sweat, forestalling evaporation.
- Wear your PPE no matter what the temperature. It can’t protect you if it’s not on you. If it’s uncomfortable, take frequent breaks.
